A Dog Gate with a Cat Gate Inside It!

If you have cats and dogs, this gate can be handy
Like other dogs we've had, Vinson is intrigued by the smell of cat litter boxes; and ingesting clumping cat litter can be very dangerous. Knowing this, we planned ahead and purchased a gate that has a smaller cat door built into it. We keep the cat boxes in a separate room, so a gate was all we needed. Although Vinson is currently small enough to get through the cat door, that will change in the coming weeks. In the meantime, we keep the gate fully closed and just let the cats in when they ask to enter their room and close the door behind them.

  1. We are raising Sparkle (from Velma's "S" litter), who is just a couple weeks younger than Vinson. We have a series of gates set up, and it turns out that our two cats, Ernie and Bennie, have enough acrobatic ability to jump from the floor and balance on the top of a gate on all four paws (reminiscent of the circus elephant on a large ball). They then choose whether to jump down to the floor on the other side of the gate, step to the kitchen counter on either side (GET DOWN, KITTY!), or turn around and go back when Sparkle gets in their faces. In this case, no need for a specialized gate.

  2. Yeah - I've wondered about that too. Our cats can leap to very high places and balance on small areas, so I suppose it's only a matter of time until they stop waiting for me to open the cat door and just go ahead and go for it!

Vinson's up to about 20 pounds now though, so it shouldn't be much longer until he's just too big to go through the cat door.
